INCARNATE WORD HANDS TWU 75-60 LOSS

AUSTIN, Texas (Nov. 18) - Four University of the Incarnate Word backcourt players scored in double-digits to lead the Cardinals past the Texas Woman's University Pioneers 75-60 in a St. Edward's Shootout game played in Austin, Texas.

Junior guard Kim Robinson paced the balanced scoring effort for UIW, totaling a game-high 21 points. Robinson converted 4 of her 6 three point shot attempts in the contest. Freshman guards Brittany Hardy and Cinnamon Kava chipped in for UIW with 19 and 15 points respectively. Another freshman guard, Nia Torru added 10 points for the Cardinals.

"Obviously, we couldn't control their backcourt scoring," said TWU head coach Rene Hanebutt. "Our team defense was atrocious in this game, and our guards got severely outplayed on the defensive end of the court. We did not stop penetration the entire game, and that was the main reason for our loss."

Senior post player Margaret Wimbish did her part to keep the Pioneers in the game, collecting a TWU team-high 19 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the field. Freshman guard Jessica Durr, who scored 10 points, was the only other player to crack double-digits offensively in the loss for the Pioneers.

"Honestly, we didn't deserve to win this game," continued Hanebutt. "UIW played harder than we did the entire game. Last season, we beat them twice, and they were very focused on beating us today. We just weren't ready to play, plain and simple."

Despite their defensive difficulties, the Pioneers found themselves down by just four points, 49-45, with 13:00 minutes left in the second half. Unfortunately, that was as close as TWU would get. UIW scored the next eight points in a row to extend their lead to twelve at 57-45. TWU would cut their deficit to six points, 62-56, with four minutes to play, but, the Pioneers comeback effort faltered, and UIW pulled away to a comfortable margin in the game's waning moments.

The loss by the Pioneers drops their record to 1-1 on the young season. With the win, Incarnate Word improves to 1-2 for the year.

TWU will try to get back in the win column next Tuesday, Nov. 21, when they travel to Magnolia, Arkansas to meet Southern Arkansas University in a 7:00 p.m. scheduled game.
