STRONG SECOND HALF LIFTS PIONEERS PAST ST. EDWARD'S 70-52

AUSTIN, Texas (Nov. 17) - The Texas Woman's University Pioneers outscored the St. Edward's Hilltoppers 38-19 in the second half en route to a 70-52 win on Friday night in Austin, Texas.

The game, which was the 2006-07 season opener for both TWU and SEU, was a story of two halves. In the opening twenty minutes, St. Edwards grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and capitalized on sloppy play by the Pioneers to gain a 33-32 halftime lead.

In the second half, TWU found their composure and started to pull away from the home team. Correcting their major weakness from the first half, TWU limited SEU to just one offensive rebound in the second half and that helped the Pioneers surge ahead. Senior post Margaret Wimbish (pictured) and freshman guard Jessica Durr made several key offensive plays down the stretch to fuel the TWU scoring run.

Wimbish led the Pioneers in the game with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Jessica Durr had an impressive collegiate debut, scoring 11 points of her own and grabbing 5 steals. Another first-year player for TWU, forward Taja Guerin, contributed mightily as well with 12 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

Team defense was a major key in the victory for TWU. The Pioneers nabbed 15 steals in the game and forced St. Edward's into 34 turnovers.

TWU head coach Rene Hanebutt was pleased with her team's play, particularly in the second half.

"In the first half, I don't think we ever got comfortable with the game was being officiated. That threw us off a little bit. However, we were able to calm down in the second half and really play well. I was very happy with the way we played in the second half. Wimbish and Durr played outstanding, and overall, as a team, we played the way we're capable of playing. This was a good way for us to start our season," said Hanebutt.

Guard Sophia Holguin and forward Tammy Bartosh paced the St. Edward's offense in defeat, scoring 13 and 11 points respectively.

TWU will look to open their season on a two-game winning streak when they face the University of the Incarnate Word at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 18 in their second and final game of the St. Edward's Shootout.
