STRONG FINISH HELPS FLYERS KNOCK OFF PIONEERS
DENTON, Texas (Nov. 12) - The Oklahoma Flyers outscored the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers 9 to 1 in the final 2:47 of regulation en route to a 66-59 win in an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon.
With her team down by a point at 58-57, Flyers guard Katie Snodgrass started the decisive run when she drained a three point basket from the left baseline to put the visitors on top 60-58.
The shot by Snodgrass would spark the Flyers, as they quickly scored two more buckets to push their lead to 64-58 with less than a minute to play.
A free throw by freshman guard Keisha Bolds pulled TWU to within five points at 64-59 with thirty seconds left on the clock.
Flyers guard Kara Pasley was fouled on the ensuing Oklahoma possession. She calmly knocked down two free throws to effectively end any chance that TWU had for a comeback.
The Flyers are a club team made up of former collegiate basketball players. Three individuals - Jamie Morgan, Kara Pasley, and Emily Jaskowiak - had eleven points each to pace Oklahoma’s offense. The win evened the Flyers record at 4-4 on the season.
Senior post Margaret Wimbish led TWU in scoring for the game with 12 points. Junior forward Savannah Thompson chipped in with 10 points and freshman post Taja Guerin added 7 points of her own.
The Pioneers, who finished the exhibition portion of their schedule with a 1-1 record, will next be in action this Friday, November 17 when they take on the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers in Austin, Texas in the first game of the St. Edward’s Shootout. The 6:00 p.m. game will be the 2006-2007 regular season opener for TWU.
