NEWTON NAMED ASSISTANT BASKETBALL COACH AT TWU
 DENTON , Texas – Former Drury University graduate assistant Callie Newton has been named assistant basketball coach at Texas Woman’s University, head coach Rene Hanebutt announced.
Newton joins the Pioneers after playing and then coaching in the Lady Panthers’ program since it started six years ago. As a graduate assistant, she assisted with coaching, recruiting, community relations, academics, workouts, scouting and summer camps. In addition to on-the-court duties, she was responsible for a booster newsletter, jog-a-thon, study hall, strength and conditioning, game-day promotions and tape exchange.
DU finished the 2005-06 season with an overall record of 30-3 and earned a berth in the finals of the NCAA regional tournament. The Panthers hosted the regional for the third straight year while posting an incredible 95-7 record during that time span.
Newton played three seasons at DU after a season at Central Missouri State University. She battled through numerous knee injuries during her Panther career.
The Republic, Mo., native earned her master’s degree in education and human services in May 2006. Newton graduated cum laude in December 2003 with her bachelor’s degree in biology and secondary education.
At Republic High School, she was a two-time all-state and All-Ozarks selection as well as a three-time all-district and all-Central Ozark Conference choice.
Newton replaces Margie Williamson who served as the assistant basketball coach while pursuing a doctorate degree at TWU.
