PIONEERS SHINE IN FINAL HOME MEET OF THE SEASON

DENTON, Texas (Mar. 10)The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers gymnastics team wrapped up the home portion of their 2007 schedule on Saturday night by recording a season-high 194.825 team score and a second place overall finish in a quadrangular meet versus Bowling Green State University, the University of Kentucky, and Southeast Missouri State University.

Kentucky won the meet with a team score of 196.200. Southeast Missouri State finished third with a score of 194.295 and Bowling Green came in fourth with a final team total of 192.575. Kentucky freshman Emily Rymer won the individual all-around competition with a 39.400 score.

TWU opened the meet by posting a 48.600 team score on vault. Junior Nicole Poling landed a 9.825 vault to earn the Pioneers' highest score of the night on the event.

Senior Courtney Arno equaled her own TWU school record with a 9.925 score on the uneven bars. Arno’s performance helped the Pioneers to an uneven bars team score of 48.575.

Sophomore Tonya Pipkorn’s 9.825 score highlighted an outstanding effort by the TWU beam workers. Freshman Rachel Zimmerman and sophomore Amy Hulbert did their part as well on beam for the Pioneers, earning matching 9.800 scores and pushing the TWU total beam score to a season-high 48.800.

The Pioneers then clinched their second place finish in the meet with a brilliant effort in their final event of the night, floor exercise. A trio of sophomores – Hulbert, Pipkorn, and Amie Boles (pictured) – led the way for TWU in event. Hulbert and Pipkorn each tallied 9.775 scores and Boles closed the event out with a season-best 9.875 mark. Overall, TWU scored a season-high team score of 48.850 on floor exercise.

TWU head coach Frank Kudlac was understandably pleased with his team’s results on Saturday night.

“For the first time this year, we had a complete performance. We hit on all four events, and consequently, we came away with our best score of the season. I am especially pleased with the way our floor exercise team responded tonight. We needed a big score on floor to stay in second place and our kids delivered. This is another step in the right direction for us,” he said.

TWU, now 9-9 on the season, will next be in action on Friday, March 16, when they travel to Tucson, Arizona for a 9:30 p.m. (CST) quad meet against Arizona, Penn State, and Kentucky.
