LATE THREE POINTER LIFTS ACU PAST TWU 66-63
ABILENE, Texas (Feb. 20) – Abilene Christian University freshman guard Kat Kundmueller hit a three-point basket with 1.8 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Wildcats a 66-63 Lone Star Conference South Division win over the Texas Woman's University Pioneers on Tuesday night in Abilene.
Kundmueller's dramatic basket capped a furious comeback by the Wildcats that saw the home team rally from a thirteen-point deficit, 52-39, in the final 13:06 of the second half.
The game was a back and forth affair that saw the lead change hands eight times. ACU led by a point, 35-34 at halftime, thanks primarily to eleven points from sophomore center Audrey Maxwell. TWU was able to stay within striking distance of the Wildcats on the strength of eleven first half points from senior post Margaret Wimbish.
The Pioneers stormed out of the dressing room to start the second half, going on an 18-4 run to jump in front by what appeared to be a comfortable margin. Sophomore guard Maggy Deweber (pictured) was the key figure in the Pioneers push, scoring eight points on two three-point shots and a short jumper.
ACU, however, would answer, battling back to tie the game at 59 with just under three minutes to play.
Two free throws by Wimbish put the Pioneers back on top 61-59. Maxwell responded for ACU with a pair of free throws of her own to forge another tie at 61. A offensive rebound putback by the Wildcats' Kristee Davidson gave ACU another two-point lead, 63-61. Freshman guard Jessica Durr came right back for the Pioneers, dropping in a jumper from inside the paint to bring the game back to even at 63.
ACU came up empty on their next possesion, giving TWU a chance to take the lead with less than 45 seconds to play. The Pioneers could not capitalize, however, as Deweber failed to connect on a three-point shot.
After a timeout, Kundmueller stepped up for the Wildcats. With the clock winding down, the first-year player from Fort Worth Christian High School gathered in a pass from ACU forward Lacey Blau. Kundmueller calmly nailed the go-ahead basket to give the Wildcats the decisive points. Deweber had one final opportunity to tie the score for TWU, but she missed a last gasp three-point shot as the horn sounded to end the game.
Wimbish was TWU's top player in the game, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Durr also played well for the Pioneers, scoring 12 points on the night to go with her 14 rebounds. Deweber made a trio of three-pointers in the game and totaled 15 points for TWU.
Maxwell paced the ACU offense with 20 points. She also grabbed 14 caroms to lead the Wildcats in rebounds as well. Davidson totaled 12 points for ACU and junior guard Alex Guiton added 12.
The loss drops the Pioneers record to 11-15 on the season and 5-8 in conference play. The defeat also put an end to TWU's hopes of qualifying for the 2007 Lone Star Conference Tournament.
With the win, ACU jumps their record to on the season to 16-11 and 7-6 in the LSC South. ACU remains alive for the conference tournament and can earn a berth in the postseason affair with a Eastern New Mexico win over Midwestern State on Thursday night.
TWU will close out their 2006-07 season this Saturday, February 24, with a 7 p.m. home game in Magee Arena against the Angelo State Rambelles. The contest will be Senior Night, as three Pioneer players - forwards Lindsey McCutcheon and Kelley Humphries, as well as Wimbish - will play their last game in a TWU uniform.
