RANDY PORTER NAMED HEAD SOFTBALL COACH AT TWU
DENTON , Texas (Dec.30) - Texas Woman’s University Director of Athletics Chalese Connors announced today that Randy Porter has been named head softball coach. Porter’s hiring will be on an interim basis for the 2007 spring season.
Porter brings both NCAA Division I and Texas high school softball head coaching experience with him to TWU.
From 1979-84, he was in charge of the University of Texas at Arlington softball program where he compiled an overall record of 250-161. Following his 1983 season with the Mavericks, he was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year.
Porter’s high school coaching resume is very extensive. In 1994, he coached at Arlington High School, and led the Lady Colts to a 15-18 mark. From 1999-01, he was the head coach at Haltom High School in Haltom City, Texas. At Haltom, he totaled a coaching record of 79-34-2 and led the Lady Buffs to a regional finals appearance in 2000 and an area championship in 2001.
Following his success at Haltom High, Porter moved on to the newly constructed Birdville ( Texas) High School in 2002. He would coach five seasons (2002-06) for the Lady Hawks, piling up an impressive 111-32 record. Porter’s efforts helped Birdville win two area championships (2003 and 2004) and reach the area finals on two other occasions (2005 and 2006).
Connors is excited to have Porter in charge of the Pioneers’ softball team.
“Randy Porter is a successful, experienced, and highly recommended coach and we are fortunate to have him join our staff. He understands that we have a talented group of student-athletes who are committed to their goals both in the classroom and on the field. I’m excited about what he brings to TWU softball and what he and our team can do together,” she said.
Porter, who received his bachelor’s degree in education in 1972 from East Central State University in Oklahoma and his master’s in education in 1975 from North Texas State University, is looking forward to his coaching opportunity at TWU.
“I’m excited to get back into softball coaching mode and I really feel like we can accomplish a great deal at TWU. I’m familiar (because of their high school or select team experience) with the majority of young ladies on our roster. That familiarity should help me bring things together and get us ready for the quickly approaching season. My goal is to win a lot of ball games and compete for the Lone Star Conference championship. I’m going to take things day-by-day and we’ll see how it goes,” Porter said.
Porter will begin his coaching duties at TWU on Jan. 8, 2007. He will immediately begin his search for an assistant coach. Sarah Hirsch will stay on Porter’s coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach. Because Porter is an interim head coach, the search for TWU’s permanent head softball coach will be addressed again at the conclusion of the 2007 season.
Porter will inherit a TWU softball squad that finished 25-36-1 overall and 13-8-1 in Lone Star Conference play in 2006. Nine players from the 2006 team will return for the Pioneers’ 2007 softball season.
The TWU softball team will open its 2007 campaign on Feb. 1 at the St. Mary’s University Tournament in San Antonio, Texas.
