TWU RALLIES TO BEAT ADAMS STATE 62-54

DENVER, Colorado (Dec. 30)  An 18-4 run over the final 8:14 of the game gave the Texas Woman's University Pioneers a come from behind 62-54 win over the Adams State Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon at the Comfort Inn Downtown Classic in Denver, Colorado.

The game was a back-and-forth affair that featured six ties and seven lead changes. Adams State jumped out to a 28-18 lead with 8:10 left in the first half before the Pioneers went on a 13-2 run to claw their way back into the contest. Adams State answered the TWU surge, and the Grizzlies took a one-point lead, 34-33, into the locker room at halftime. Senior post player Margaret Wimbish totaled 9 first half points for the Pioneers. The Grizzlies were paced in the opening twenty minutes by junior guard Ashley Chamber's 16 points.

To start the second half, consecutive three-point baskets by the Grizzlies' Laurel Mortensen and Chambers pushed the Adams State advantage to 40-33. TWU would forge a tie at 41 only to see Adams State pull away again, this time by six points, 50-44, with 8:14 to play in regulation.

Freshman post player Chelsea Cook started the TWU rally by nailing a three-point shot from the top of the key with 7:14 showing on the clock. Moments later, TWU freshman forward Taja Guerin tied the game at 50 by converting a three-point play in the paint. After the Pioneers made a defensive stop, freshman guard Jessica Durr gave TWU a 52-50 lead with a driving layup. With momentum on their side, TWU would not trail again. Wimbish and Cook scored four points apiece down the stretch to help the Pioneers keep Adams State at bay and allow TWU to hang on for the victory.

TWU head coach Rene Hanebutt said her team's offensive execution late in the game was critical.

"We didn't shoot well today (35.1% field goal percentage for the game), but we still found ways to score when we needed to. When your shots aren't falling, you still have to create offense. We did that this afternoon, with our defense, rebounding, and penetration," she explained.

Wimbish led TWU with 16 points while Cook and Guerin each collected 11 points. Cook grabbed 14 rebounds for the Pioneers and Wimbish snagged 11 caroms.

Chambers had a game-high 22 points for Adams State. Mortensen added 13 points and 9 assists for the Grizzlies.

With the win, TWU improves to 7-5 (2-0 in the LSC South) on the season. The loss for Adams State drops their record to 3-9 for the year.

The Pioneers will next be in action on Thursday, January 4, when they host the Cameron Aggies at 7:00 p.m. at Kitty Magee Arena.
