PIONEERS DROP 66-65 DECISION TO EASTERN NEW MEXICO
PORTALES, New Mexico (Feb. 8) – Eastern New Mexico University senior guard Heather Brown made two free throws with 15 seconds left in regulation to give the Zias a 66-65 win over the Texas Woman's University Pioneers in a Thursday night Lone Star Conference South Division basketball game in Portales, New Mexico.
The Zias trailed by one, 65-64, with less than 30 seconds to play. TWU forced ENMU guard Lindsey Wood to miss a jump shot with 22 seconds showing on the clock. Zias guard Elizabeth Richards rebounded Wood's miss to set up Brown's scoring opportunity. Brown, a Hereford, Texas native, was fouled by TWU freshman guard Jessica Durr. She stepped to the free throw line and calmly sank both of her free throws to put the Zias (11-10, 2-7 LSC South) in front by a point.
After a timeout, TWU had one final offensive opportunity to answer Brown's dramatic free throws. The Pioneers, however, were unable to get a shot off before time expired and the Zias were able to walk off the court with just their second LSC South win of the season.
Brown finished as the Zias leading scorer in the game with 20 points. Senior guard Missy Kirkland chipped in with 13 points and Richards finished with 10 points for ENMU.
Brown's big night helped ENMU overcome a remarkable performance by TWU sophomore guard Maggy Deweber (pictured). The Pioneers second-year player from Bowie, Texas poured in a career high 21 points (thanks mainly to 5 of 7 shooting from behind the three-point line). Deweber tallied 17 of her points in the first half of play to help TWU jump out to a 23-9 lead and take a 33-21 advantage into the locker room at half.
Freshman post Taja Guerin and Chelsea Cook contributed 11 and 8 points respectively to the TWU offensive effort.
Rene Hanebutt, TWU's second year head coach, found several positives in the loss by the Pioneers.
"As I expected, this one went right down to the wire. We just didn't make the plays down the stretch to win the ballgame. I thought our post players did an excellent job tonight, specifically on the defensive end of the court. Maggy (Deweber) came through with a strong shooting night. We played hard enough to win this one, but, unfortunately, we came up just short," she explained.
The loss drops the Pioneers record to 10-12 for the season and 4-5 in LSC South play. TWU will look to bounce back on Saturday night, February 10, when they travel to Canyon, Texas to meet the LSC South leading West Texas A&M Lady Buffs in a 7:00 p.m. game.
