TWU ATHLETICS HONORS STUDENT-ATHLETES AT ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET

DENTON, Texas (May 4)The Texas Woman’s University athletic department held its 2007-08 athletic awards banquet on Sunday evening in Hubbard Hall on the TWU campus. Teams and individuals were honored for their athletic and academic accomplishments in basketball, gymnastics, soccer, softball, volleyball and athletic training during the current academic year.

“Our athletic department enjoyed another wonderful year,” TWU Director of Athletics Chalese Connors said.  “Tonight’s banquet was a fitting way to recognize all of our Pioneer student-athletes, coaches, and staff for their efforts over the last nine months.”

Dr. Richard Nicholas, TWU Vice President for Student Life, was in attendance to present the 2007-08 President’s Award, the highest honor given to a current TWU student-athlete. This prestigious award, recognizing excellence in sport, in the classroom, and in the promotion of TWU Athletics, was taken home by senior gymnast Courtney Arno-Templet (pictured with Nicholas at right).

Arno-Templet, a native of Coppell, Texas, has been a standout on the Pioneers’ acclaimed gymnastics team for the last four years (2005-2008). She served as one of the TWU team captains for the last three seasons (2006-08), and helped the Pioneers win the USA Gymnastics (USAG) Women’s Collegiate National Championship in 2006 and 2008. She also earned four USAG individual event national titles, two on bars and two on beam. She is an eight-time USAG All-American and a five-time Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) All-Conference selection. She competed at the NCAA South Central Regional in 2006, 2007, and 2008, and her fifth place tie on bars at 2007 regional meet was the highest ever finish by a TWU gymnast at a regional competition.

Arno-Templet has also found success in the classroom at TWU. She is a three-time (2006-08) USA Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete, a four-time (2005-2008) MIC Scholar-Athlete, and a three-time National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women Scholastic (NACGC/W) All-American. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing from TWU in May 2007 and is currently enrolled in the school’s executive MBA program.

Four other Pioneer student-athletes were nominated for the President’s Award: sophomore Jessica Durr, a two-year letterwinner in basketball; senior Romy Luna, a four-year letterwinner in soccer; sophomore Allie Packer, a two-year letterwinner in softball; and junior Kandis Schroeder, a three-year letter winner in volleyball.

The Kitty Magee Award, recognizing the most dedicated student-athlete, was shared by junior gymnast Brista Michael and senior basketball player Jennifer Schilb . The Jo Kuhn Award, which honors outstanding leadership, was claimed by senior soccer standout Sue Cribbes. The TWU athletic training staff selected Michael for their Golden Cast Award, an honor given to the student-athlete who is the most conscientious about the treatment and rehabilitation of her injuries.

Six Pioneers - Arno-Templet (gymnastics), junior Jacqueline Horner (soccer), senior Meagan Peiser (softball), junior Renee Renz (basketball), and seniors Heather Marcus and Kasye Richmond (volleyball) earned Outstanding Athlete Awards for their respective sport. The Outstanding Student Athletic Trainer Award was presented to Paul Mallamaci.
