PUTTING FORE PIONEERS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, APRIL 8
DENTON, Texas (April 3) – The fourth annual Putting Fore Pioneers Tournament will be held on Tuesday, April 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Texas Woman’s University Student Union.
Putting Fore Pioneers is a nine-hole miniature golf tournament. The objective for contestants is to complete all nine holes of golf in the lowest number of strokes. Trophies and bragging rights will be awarded to the top individual and top two-player team in both the faculty/staff and student division. The TWU Student Organization that has the most participants will also win a grand prize of a catered lunch for 30 people from Jason’s Deli. The entry fee to participate is $5.00 for faculty/staff members, and $2.00 for students.
All contestants that compete in the Putting Fore Pioneers tournament will automatically entered in a raffle to win prizes such as Texas Rangers baseball tickets, Dallas Symphony tickets, Texas Motor Speedway tickets, Six Flags tickets, and much more. The raffle prizes will be given away starting at 3 p.m. Fans can purchase their raffle tickets in advance (for $1 apiece) at the TWU Athletic department offices (Pioneer Hall/220).
All proceeds from the event benefit student-athlete scholarships.
“We are in the middle of the biggest push of the Pioneer Athletics Fund Drive and Putting Fore Pioneers is a unique way to get our campus community involved,” Director of Athletics Chalese Connors said. “I’m hopeful that instructors, staff members and students will come over to the Student Union next Tuesday and participate in this fun event.”
Each year, approximately 85 Pioneer student-athletes participate in intercollegiate athletics while also excelling academically at the University. For 51 consecutive semesters, the cumulative grade point average of all five TWU teams has never dropped below a 3.0. Almost all TWU student-athletes receive some form of scholarship assistance, ranging from small awards to full scholarships that cover tuition, fees, housing, meals and books.
For the 2007-08 academic year, a full grant-in-aid at TWU will cost an estimated $12,626.50 and the amount needed to support the five Pioneer varsity teams is $518,949.15 through a combination of donations, fundraisers, University support, and generated revenue from the Athletics department and its summer camps.
