PIONEER STUDENT-ATHLETES CONTINUE ACADEMIC SUCCESS

DENTON, Texas (January 15, 2008) – The student-athletes at Texas Woman’s University continue to achieve academic excellence as evidenced by the posting of fall grades. For the 51st consecutive semester – 25 ½ years – the cumulative grade point average of all Pioneer student-athletes has been 3.0 or better. The Pioneers recorded a 3.22 grade point average in the recently completed 2007 fall semester.

“This is wonderful news and shows again how our coaches and student-athletes are committed to a balance of academic and athletics achievement,” Director of Athletics Chalese Connors said. “The student-athletes must believe in this commitment and then fulfill their potential each and every semester.”

The Pioneer volleyball squad (pictured) established a new record for the highest team GPA in a semester with an impressive 3.677. The previous semester-high came in the spring of 2000 when the tennis team totaled a 3.671 mark.

“Wow! That’s a remarkable accomplishment,” said Connors. “There is a spirited competition on the hallway amongst the coaches and they push each other. Recently, volleyball and gymnastics have gone back and forth with the highest team GPA. Volleyball came out on top with a new record high and our volleyball coaching staff, Shelly Barberee and Carley Messmer, and all of our volleyball student-athletes are to be congratulated for a job well done.”

The gymnastics team had the second-highest team GPA with a commendable 3.423. The basketball team posted their highest team GPA in five semesters - a 3.045.

Individually, 12 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester: four from volleyball - Kendra Coulson, Kasye Richmond, Sharon Schaffner, and Kandis Schroeder; three from soccer - Jacqueline Horner, Christine Hornisher, and Aly Vincent; three from gymnastics - Courtney Arno, Amie Boles, and Brista Michael; and two from softball - Billie Callahan and Allie Packer.

There were 80 Pioneers on the fall rosters for TWU’s five NCAA Division II sports: basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball, which compete in the Lone Star Conference, and gymnastics which competes as an independent.
