CRITICAL CONFERENCE TILTS ON TAP FOR TWU VOLLEYBALL AND SOCCER TEAMS
DENTON, Texas (October 18) – Both the TWU Volleyball and the TWU Soccer teams have critical Lone Star Conference competitions on tap for this week.
The TWU Volleyball team, currently 12-9 on the season and 4-3 in LSC play, has traveled to San Angelo, Texas, where they will play the Angelo State University Rambelles at 7:00 p.m. tonight. At 4-2 in conference play, ASU is one game ahead of TWU in the conference standings.
Following their match tonight, the Pioneer volleyballers will travel to Abilene, Texas for a match on Saturday night, October 20, at 7:00 p.m. against the ACU Wildcats. ACU is also a game in front of TWU in the conference standings.
TWU head volleyball coach Shelly Barberee recognizes the importance of these two matches.
“There’s no denying that these are huge matches for us. Our goal is to qualify for the postseason conference tournament and in order to do that, we need to beat the teams in front of us in the standings,” she explained.
The top eight teams in the final conference standings will qualify for the 2007 LSC Volleyball Tournament to be played November 8-10 at the site of the regular season conference champion. The Pioneers have played in the conference tourney the last four years in a row.
The TWU Soccer team has won three conference games in a row to improve their record to 6-8-1 overall and 3-3 in the LSC. On Friday, October 19, TWU will host the West Texas A&M University Lady Buffs at 5:00 p.m. at the TWU Soccer Field. The Lady Buffs are currently one game better (4-3) than the Pioneers in the conference standings. Tomorrow’s game will be a Maroon Out, as all fans that wear maroon to the game can receive a free popcorn from the TWU Concession Stand.
On Sunday, October 21, the Pioneers will face the Eastern New Mexico University Zias on their home field at 1:00 p.m. The Zias are just a game behind (3-4) TWU in the conference race. Sunday’s game will be the final home game of the 2007 season for the Pioneers.
Fleur Benatar, the Pioneers’ head soccer coach, feels good about her team’s chances this week.
“We’ve been playing really good soccer as of late. That should give us a ton of confidence against WTAMU and ENMU. As far as the conference race goes, we control our own destiny. If we take care of our business, we can make it to the tournament. Only the top six teams go the tourney, and right now, we’re tied for the final spot. A couple of wins this weekend would really help our cause,” stated Benatar.
The 2007 LSC Soccer Tournament will be played November 1-4 at the site of the regular season conference champion.
