PIONEERS SHUTOUT BY BRONCHOS

IRVING , Texas – Texas Woman’s University struggled offensively with three hits in a 3-0 loss to Central Oklahoma in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Softball Championship Tournament.

The Pioneers (25-35-1) were contained by Bronchos (25-13) starter Alli Blake who threw a complete game shutout.

“Lindsy (Russ-Keller) pitched well enough to win. The error in the first inning really hurt us. In terms of momentum a zero in the inning is a new ball game,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “We didn’t make the adjustments at the plate to her (Blake’s) type of pitching. She is a drop ball pitcher. It was either on the bat handle or down as opposed to getting to the ball.”

TWU will play the loser of the game between Abilene Christian, the top seed from the South, and Southeastern Oklahoma, the second seed from the North, at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow. The Pioneers must win to continue postseason play at 3:00 p.m.

UCO advances to play the North division No. 1 seed Midwestern State at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. SOSU beat Angelo State 9-2 in the other opening round game tonight.

The Bronchos took the early lead scoring two unearned runs in the first inning. Meagan Campbell singled, stole second and advanced to third before scoring on a Pioneer error with two outs. UCO added another run on an Alley Roberts RBI triple to the right field fence.

The Pioneers best scoring opportunity was in the first frame. With one out, Rachel Johnson walked. Amanda Arnold followed with a single through the left side. Next, Amanda Danesi grounded out advancing the runners to second and third base. Blake induced another groundball by Rhonda Sherman to end the threat.

With two hits in the second frame, UCO added another run. Stacy Walden singled and crossed home plate on a Lindsay Tripp double to right field.

Down 3-0, the TWU offense stalled. The Pioneers didn’t advance a runner past second base for the rest of the game. UCO kept the pressure on with six stolen bases.

“We didn’t know much about them (UCO) at all. They played us very well. Running opens up the game and allowed them to do everything,” Blowers said. “We figured it out and stopped them after the second inning. But we have to turn the tables offensively and make adjustments.”

Tiffanie Boone, Arnold and Danesi each had a hit for TWU. Russ-Keller started in the circle for TWU. The junior went the distance allowing eight hits, three runs (one earned) and two walks with one strikeout.

“Tomorrow we need to come out with more intensity and be ready to play,” Blowers added. “We need to be impressive in the first inning on offense and defense.”
