PIONEERS TAKE TWO MORE FROM LADY BUFFS

DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University found a way to win a pair of close games and complete the four-game sweep of West Texas A&M in Lone Star Conference action.

The opener went eight innings before the Pioneers (24-31-1, 12-5-1) prevailed 8-7. In the second game, TWU won 9-8 by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

By taking all four games, TWU remained in second place in the LSC South Division with Eastern New Mexico (11-9 LSC) and Angelo State (11-7 LSC) right behind them. The top three teams earn a spot in the postseason tournament. Abilene Christian leads the league with a 15-3 record. The Wildcats had a bye this weekend and host the Pioneers April 21-22.

WTAMU (11-39, 1-19) is in their first season of softball. The Lady Buffs have lost 23 of their last 25 games.

TWU needed extra innings to win game one after WTAMU broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning.

Trailing 4-7, the Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the seventh frame. Amanda Arnold started the comeback with a single up the middle on the 0-2 pitch. Amanda Danesi followed with a double down the left field line. Rhonda Sherman loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice to the shortstop. Consecutive RBI ground outs and a Rachel Townsend single tied the game.

The Lady Buffs started the eighth inning with back-to-back singles. Ashley Martin ended the threat with three successive strikeouts.

The Pioneers used three Lady Buff errors to end the game. Tiffanie Boone reached on the first error. After she stole second base, Arnold singled putting runners on second and third base. Danesi loaded the base on another error. Boone scored the game winner on the third WTAMU miscue.

TWU had 14 hits including a 4-for-4 effort by Townsend. Martin earned the win in relief. In 2.2 innings, she shut out WTAMU with four hits and four k's.

The Pioneers had to rally to win game two as well. WTAMU jumped out to an early lead before TWU posted five runs in the third frame to take a 7-6 advantage.

TWU tallied six hits for five runs and the lead. Amanda Emory started the inning with a single and swiped second base. Arnold generated the first run with a single to right field. Danesi added another single. Next, Sherman reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Rachel Johnson added two more runs with a single to center field. Krystyna Sims followed with a bunt single plating Sherman. Townsend and Sarah White also drove in a run.

The Lady Buffs added two runs in the sixth to reclaim the lead. TWU put together another seventh inning response.

Danesi began the comeback with a double down the left field line. Chelsea Reilly entered to pinch run. After that, Sherman and Johnson both flied out. In came Ashley Hartley to hit for Sims. She promptly sent the 0-1 pitch down the left field line for a double which scored Reilly and tied the game. Townsend drove in the game-winner with a single to right field plating Hartley.

TWU totaled 14 hits in the nightcap too. Danesi led the way with a 3-for-4 performance. Martin earned her second win of the day with a complete game endeavor.

Next, TWU is at ACU for a league match-up. The series begins with a doubleheader on April 21 at 5:00 p.m.
