PIONEERS SWEEP LADY BUFFS
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University swept West Texas A&M in Lone Star Conference action with 3-2 and 7-1 victories at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers (22-31-1, 10-5-1) won both games against the Lady Buffs (11-37, 1-17).
“The first game was slow. In the second game we picked up the intensity,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “Ashley (Martin) pitched a good game but didn’t have any run support. Amanda (Arnold) pinch hit and tied the game with a single.”
In the opener, WTAMU scored first with a run in the second inning. The Lady Buffs added a run in the fifth frame to lead 2-0.
TWU scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to win the game. Rachel Townsend began the inning by reaching on an error and advancing to second. With Townsend on third and Sarah White on second, Arnold singled up the middle to score them both. Amanda Danesi plated another run with a sacrifice fly scoring Tiffanie Boone.
Martin earned the win in seven innings of action, allowing eight hits and two runs with four strikeouts.
The Pioneers won the nightcap with seven runs off eight hits. TWU scored two runs in the second inning before adding five runs in the fifth and sixth frames combined.
In the second frame, Rachel Johnson went deep to score Amanda Danesi for a 2-0 lead. It was the third home run of the season for Johnson.
WT scored its lone run in the fourth on a Jenny Matulich double to right field.
TWU capitalized on three WT errors to score three runs in the fifth inning. Amanda Emory started the rally with a single. Then she stole second and advance to third on an Arnold sacrifice bunt. Next Danesi reached on an error. Rhonda Sherman and Johnson followed by reaching base after being hit by a pitch and a fielder’s choice, respectively. They both scored on a throwing error to give TWU a 5-1 advantage.
TWU added two insurance runs in the sixth frame. Ashley Hartley and Emory both scored after singles.
Lindsy Russ-Keller earned the win allowing four hits, one run and two walks with four k’s. Emory had three hits with two runs scored and a RBI.
“Lindsy got run support in game two,” Blowers added. “Rachel started the scoring with a homer.”
The Pioneers host the Lady Buffs for another doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
