PIONEERS DROP DOUBLEHEADER TO MULERIDERS
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Southern Arkansas University after a one-hour delay due to mechanical issues with the Muleriders bus.
The Pioneers (20-31-1) lost game one 2-8 and game two 0-6 to the Muleriders (19-23).
“This was below our performances as of late. The pitchers didn’t have many options but the middle of the plate. The consequences are base hits,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “This is a big weekend. We will get ready tomorrow and Thursday for West Texas A&M.”
The journey to Denton didn’t seem to affect SAU as they won the opener. The Muleriders connected for two homers off Pioneer starter Krystyna Sims. Tisha Thompson and Erin Litvik each hit a long ball in the third and sixth innings, respectively.
TWU responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run. Amanda Arnold scored after reaching on a three-base error by the SAU left fielder.
The Pioneers added its second run in the sixth frame. Amanda Emory walked and stole second base before Rhonda Sherman hit a RBI double.
Sims took the loss (0-3) allowing 11 hits, eight runs (seven earned) and eight walks. Kayla King earned the win (13-12) giving up two hits and a run with two k’s.
Tiffanie Boone, Sherman and Rachel Townsend each had one of the Pioneers three hits.
In the nightcap, King threw a five-hit complete game shutout for the Muleriders. SAU took the early lead with two runs off three hits in the second inning.
Then, SAU broke the game open with two long balls in the seventh inning off TWU starter Ashley Martin. Whitney Brannon and Litvik each went deep to put the game out of reach.
Martin took the loss (7-14) in seven innings of action. She allowed 10 hits and six runs with five strikeouts.
Up next for TWU is a four-game Lone Star Conference series with West Texas A&M April 14-15. Action begins with a doubleheader on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
