PITCHERS DELIVER A SPLIT WITH THE ZIAS
PORTALES , N.M. – Lindsy Russ-Keller and Ashley Martin both delivered strong pitching performances to lead Texas Woman’s University to a split in Lone Star Conference competition at Eastern New Mexico.
The Pioneers (18-29, 6-5-1) won the first game, 4-1, and dropped game two, 0-1, to the Zias (29-15, 9-5).
“Lindsy pitched really well in the first game,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “Ashley had a good second game allowing just five hits. We didn’t have the bats in game two and they scored on a walk.”
The Pioneers took the opener with four runs on seven hits. The Zias scored first with a run in the third inning.
TWU responded with two runs in the fourth frame en route to the victory. Amanda Danesi started the comeback by reaching first base after being hit by a pitch. Rhonda Sherman advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt before Chelsea Reilly entered as a pinch runner. Then Rachel Johnson recorded the big hit with a home run to right field, her second long ball of the season.
It was déjà vu in the fifth inning as Sarah White was hit by a pitch and took first base to begin the frame. Tiffanie Boone followed with a single to advance White. Amanda Emory sacrificed the runners to second and third base before White scored on an error by the Zias leftfielder.
The Pioneers added an insurance run in the seventh frame courtesy of Emory. Emory singled, stole second, advanced to third and crossed home plate on a Danesi bunt single.
Boone and Johnson led TWU with two hits each. Russ-Keller (9-11) went the distance allowing one run and six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
ENMU took the nightcap scoring the only run of the game in the third inning. The Zias loaded the bases with two consecutive singles and a Pioneer error. With two outs, Kelsey Kubik drew a walk to score Kristina Goodman.
TWU managed just two hits against Zia starter Rosemary Moreno (16-5). Emory and Amanda Arnold each singled in the first inning.
Martin (7-13) started the game in the circle. She threw six innings giving up five hits and the unearned run with one walk and one strikeout.
The teams wrap up the LSC series with a doubleheader on April 8 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
