PIONEERS EARN SPLIT WITH GAME TWO WIN
DENTON , Texas – After a defensive breakdown in game one, Texas Woman’s University got back on track to earn a split with the University of Texas at Dallas in a non-conference doubleheader at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers (17-28-1) lost, 3-6, in the opener with seven hits and seven errors before winning the nightcap, 2-1, over the Comets (15-11).
“We didn’t show up in game one,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “We were below par even in game two. Some individuals had success but as a team we just won the game.”
TWU started game one with two runs in its first at-bat. Tiffanie Boone reached on a Comet error and advanced to second to start the inning. Amanda Emory followed with a bunt single scoring Boone. Amanda Danesi laid down another bunt to plate Emory.
The Pioneers generated another run in the second frame. Rachel Johnson led off with a single. Ashley Hartley sacrificed her to second base. Johnson promptly stole third base and advanced home after a UTD throwing error.
The Comets took the lead with a four-run fifth inning. UTD utilized four runs, three hits and three Pioneer errors to take control of the game.
UTD added two more runs in the sixth frame knocking TWU starter Krystyna Sims out of the game. Ashley Martin entered in relief.
Sims took the loss in 5.1 innings. She allowed nine hits and six runs with just one earned run. The seven defensive miscues topped the previous school record of six which happened on two occasions.
The Comets held a 1-0 lead for the majority of the second game. UTD posted its lone run in the first frame with an infield single and sacrifice fly.
The Pioneers prevailed with a rally in the sixth inning, scoring a pair of runs with three hits. With one out, Sarah White singled up the middle. Boone followed with an infield single. Next, White stole third base and Boone advanced to second. Johnson knocked in both runs with a pinch-hit single to left field.
Martin earned the win with a complete game effort including four k’s. Six different Pioneers tallied a hit in the contest.
TWU returns to Lone Star Conference play with a key four-game series at Eastern New Mexico this weekend. The action begins at 5:00 p.m. on April 7. The Zias are currently in second place in the South Division with an 8-4 mark, just ahead of the Pioneers.
