PIONEERS SPLIT WITH TEXANNS BUT MOVE INTO THIRD PLACE
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University earned a split with Tarleton State winning the nightcap, 6-1, after losing the opener, 6-11 in eight innings, in Lone Star Conference action at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers (16-27-1, 5-4-1) moved into third place in the LSC South Division with the help of Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Javelinas beat Angelo State twice today dropping the Rambelles into fourth. The Texanns (22-15, 7-9) remained fifth in the standings.
“Ashley (Martin) pitched a good game in the opener. With the game tied it seemed like the right thing to make the switch,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “The loss of focus in the sixth inning and after the change hurt us.”
TSU took the opener in extra innings after tying the game in the sixth frame with four runs.
TWU took an early 2-0 lead with doubles by Amber Brooks and Rhonda Sherman in the first inning.
The Texanns scored twice in the third frame to even the score. The Pioneers tallied a run in the third and two in fourth to claim a 5-2 advantage.
Rhonda Sherman continued her power surge with a solo home run in the fifth frame. She took the first pitch over the left field fence for her fifth long ball of the year.
TSU negated the TWU lead in the sixth inning with four runs. The big hit was an Ashley Bray triple to right center field which brought in two runs.
The Texanns kept the momentum in the eighth en route to the comeback victory. Lindsy Russ-Keller relieved Martin in the circle and TSU greeted her with a two-out five-run rally.
Russ-Keller took the loss in one inning of work. Martin allowed 11 hits, six runs and four walks with three k’s in seven innings.
Amber Brooks paced the offense with three hits including two doubles and a single.
The Pioneers earned the split with a win in the nightcap. TSU scored its only run in the first inning.
TWU scored two runs in the first, second and fifth frames. Russ-Keller earned the win with a five-hit effort including six strikeouts.
Boone led off the game with a single and stole second, advanced to third and scored on a TSU error. Brooks also scored on Sherman’s infield hit.
Rachel Johnson and Sarah White scored for TWU in the second frame. The Pioneers utilized three hits to take a 4-1 lead.
The Pioneers added insurance runs in the fifth frame. Brooks started the inning with a walk. Next, Ashley Hartley was hit by a pitch. After a Sherman sacrifice bunt, Johnson scored Brooks with a sacrifice fly. Rachel Townsend followed with a double down the left field line plating Hartley.
Boone and Townsend each had two of the Pioneers nine hits.
“Lindsy pitched well against a good hitting team,” Blowers added. “In game two our hitting, fielding, aggressive base running and pitching worked. When all the facets are working we are pretty good.”
Next, TWU hosts UT-Dallas for a non-conference doubleheader on April 4. First pitch is at 5:00 p.m.
