PIONEERS DROP TWO, SPLIT LEAGUE SERIES WITH RAMBELLES
SAN ANGELO , Texas – After winning both games on Friday, the tables were turned on Texas Woman’s University as Angelo State earned a Lone Star Conference split with two victories on Saturday.
The Pioneers (14-25-1, 3-2-1) fell 0-8 (six innings) and 8-10 to the Rambelles (20-17, 6-4).
“We just had a tough time getting on track in game one. The second game was a real dog fight,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “I am extremely proud of the way the team played this weekend.”
In the opener, TWU was shut out in six innings. The Pioneers had five hits and also left five runners on base. ASU recorded 12 hits including two home runs.
Lindsy Russ-Keller took the loss (6-9) allowing seven hits and five runs (four earned) in three innings of action. Krystyna Sims pitched 2.2 innings of relief.
The nightcap was a back and forth affair. TWU started the game with three runs in both the first and second innings.
Tiffanie Boone led off with a single to get the Pioneer offense going. Amanda Emory and Amber Brooks followed with base hits. All three scored for the early lead.
In the second frame, Rachel Townsend singled before Boone tripled to score her. Brooks added a base hit prior to an Amanda Danesi sacrifice fly put TWU on top 6-4.
ASU responded with a run in the second and three in the fourth to take an 8-7 lead.
The Pioneers tied the contest in the top of the fifth inning. Rachel Johnson scored after drawing a two-out base on balls.
The Rambelles answered in the bottom of the frame. With two outs and a runner on base, Kandace Kubat sent Ashley Martin’s 1-2 pitch over the right field fence.
Boone, Brooks, Amanda Arnold and Townsend each registered two hits in the game.
Martin started the game before Russ-Keller relieved her in the sixth inning. She gave up six hits and 10 runs (eight earned) with six walks and three strikeouts.
Next, the Pioneers host Tarleton State on March 31. The doubleheader starts at 5:00 p.m.
