OFFENSE AND PITCHING LEAD TWU TO WINS OVER ASU
SAN ANGELO , Texas – Rhonda Sherman hit two home runs including a grand slam to propel Texas Woman’s University to a pair of Lone Star Conference victories over Angelo State.
The offensive dominance along with superb pitching led the Pioneers (14-23-1, 3-0-1) to 13-3 (five innings) and 7-3 wins over the Rambelles (18-17, 4-4).
TWU tallied 14 hits in each game compared to just five for ASU. The Rambelles also committed seven errors.
“We had excellent pitching. Lindsy (Russ-Keller) and Ashley (Martin) were awesome,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “We also had good hitting. Rhonda hit a grand slam in the first game and a two-run homer in game two. Rachel (Johnson) had a home run as well. Amanda ( Arnold) blistered the ball.”
The Pioneers took the early lead in both contests and scored all 13 runs in the first game with two outs. The big hit was Sherman’s grand slam to left field in the second inning. With Amanda Emory, Amber Brooks and Amanda Danesi on base Sherman took the 1-1 pitch from Rachel Walck deep.
TWU took game two after taking a 3-0 lead in the third frame. Johnson put the Pioneers on the board with a solo home run in the second inning.
Sherman added her second long ball of the night and third of the year in the fifth frame. With Brooks on base, she took the 3-2 pitch over the left field fence.
After ASU scored two runs in the sixth inning, TWU plated a duo of insurance runs in the seventh. Three doubles in a row by Danesi, Sherman and Arnold scored both runs.
Offensively, Sherman had a career night going 6-for-7 at the plate with eight RBI’s and four runs scored. Her five RBI’s in game one tied the school record held by six players. She also hit the third grand slam in the Pioneers history and the first since the 2002 season.
Russ-Keller went the distance in game one with three strikeouts. Martin earned the win in game two in five innings of work before Russ-Keller picked up the save in relief.
“Tonight the team did very, very well. We were consistent and need to get out there and do it again tomorrow,” Blowers added.
The teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
