PIONEERS SWEEP RAMS
DENTON, Texas – On a cold night at Pioneer Field, the Texas Woman’s University offense heated up to sweep Texas Wesleyan in non-conference action.
The Pioneers (12-23-1) took game one, 7-4, and game two, 12-5, ending the Rams (14-8) 14-game win streak.
“We were very happy with our offense today. The offense really helped the pitching,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “It was not a great day for the pitchers. They had some adversity but the offensive and defensive support helped. All in all the hitting was very good.”
Amber Brooks was the offensive catalyst. She went 4-for-6 including five RBI’s and four runs scored in the doubleheader.
“I’m so proud of Amber. As a freshman she earned the three hole in the lineup. She is producing and confident at the plate,” Blowers added. “Amanda’s (Danesi) homer was good. We have been working with her on contacting and hitting the ball harder. Rachel (Johnson) and Rachel (Townsend) both made good solid contact.”
TWU took game one with seven runs off eight hits. All the runs came in the fourth and fifth innings.
Lindsy Russ-Keller (5-8) earned the win with a complete game endeavor with four strikeouts.
The Pioneers took an early lead in game two with three runs in the first at-bat. With two outs, Brooks reached on an error followed by Danesi and Amanda Arnold singles. With two runners on, Johnson tripled to clear the bases.
Wesleyan took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning before TWU took control of the game. The Pioneers reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
TWU broke the game open with six runs on six hits and one Ram error in the fifth frame. Danesi hit her second home run of the season in the inning.
Ashley Martin started the game in the circle for TWU. Martin sat down six in seven innings of action.
Next, TWU travels to Angelo State on March 24 for a Lone Star Conference Series beginning at 5:00 p.m.
