ERRORS IMPAIR PIONEERS AGAINST THE RATTLERS
AUSTIN , Texas – Defensive miscues hurt Texas Woman’s University as St. Mary’s won 3-0 and 7-6 in nine innings in a non-conference doubleheader at Rattler Field.
The Pioneers (9-23) had a total of seven errors in the two games. St. Mary’s (21-10) has won 15 of their last 17 contests.
Lindsy Russ-Keller started both games in the circle for TWU. She took the loss in game one despite allowing four hits, three runs (one earned) with three strikeouts.
Offensively, the Pioneers got just one hit off Rattler starter Brittany Brown. Amanda Emory had the lone hit with an infield single in the first inning.
“Lindsy pitched a very good game. Again our offense lacked intensity,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “Game two went nine innings. We fought until the seventh when the intensity waned.”
TWU found its offense in the third inning of game two with a five-run outburst. Rhonda Sherman supplied the power with a three-run home run. Amber Brooks and Amanda Emory scored on the long ball by Sherman, her first of the season.
St. Mary’s came back to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth frame. The Pioneers then reclaimed the lead with a run in the sixth inning. Krystyna Sims reached on a throwing error and scored on a Sarah White single.
The Rattlers forced extra innings with a run in their last at-bat and ended the game in the ninth frame. After back-to-back ground outs, they loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Jessica Romero followed with the game-winning hit to center field.
“We started game two really well. Rhonda hit a home run to put us up 5-0 early,” Blowers added. “Amber and Sarah both hit really well too.”
Next, the Pioneers host Texas A&M-Kingsville on March 17 to open Lone Star Conference play. The doubleheader begins at 5:00 p.m.
