TWU SHUT OUT BY NO. 17 UIW
SAN ANTONIO , Texas – Texas Woman’s University failed to score and was swept by No. 17 Incarnate Word in a non-conference doubleheader at Cardinals Field.
The Cardinals (24-6) shut out the Pioneers (9-21) taking game one, 8-0, in six innings and game two, 1-0. UIW extended its winning streak to eight games and have won 15 of their last 17. TWU is in the midst of a stretch of nine games in four days.
“We only got one hit but hit the ball hard in the first game. We got hit hard too,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “In game two, Lindsy (Russ-Keller) pitched a really good game. She threw a three-hitter. We got three hits as well but stranded runners.”
UIW starter Amanda Sparks had a perfect game intact through the first five innings of game one. Krystyna Sims picked up the only hit for TWU with a double down the left field line to break it up.
The Cardinals scored four runs in the third frame to take control of the game. UIW added a run in the fourth and three in the sixth to enforce the run rule.
TWU had three hits in the second game but struck out seven times. UIW scored the only run of the game in the second inning with a single, sacrifice bunt and base hit.
The Pioneers wrap up its Spring Break road swing with two games at St. Mary’s on March 14 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
