TWU BEGINS ST. EDWARD’S TOURNAMENT WITH THREE LOSSES

AUSTIN , Texas – Texas Woman’s University was out scored and out hit in three losses at the Hilltopper Classic hosted by St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas.

The Pioneers (8-18) dropped games to host SEU, 8-4, St. Mary’s, 5-4, and Culver-Stockton College, 2-1. TWU scored a total of nine runs with 17 hits in the three contests compared to 15 runs off 28 hits for its opponents.

On the base paths, the Pioneers were a perfect 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts. Tiffanie Boone led the way with three steals and has a team-high 21 this season. Amanda Emory added two swipes.

“Our base running including 10 stolen bases was a real positive today,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “We are still struggling at the plate. Some moments we look really good. That lasts for an inning or two. After that we cease producing and lose intensity.”

TWU started the day with three runs off four hits in the first inning against SEU. Boone led off with a bunt single. Emory added an infield hit before Rachel Townsend and Amanda Danesi struck out swinging. With two outs, Rhonda Sherman singled to center field scoring Boone and Emory. Rachel Johnson followed with another base hit to plate Sherman.

SEU came right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. With two Hilltoppers on base, Lindsey Heye tied the game with a home run off TWU starter Krystyna Sims.

The Hilltoppers added five more runs to improve to 20-9 this season. The Pioneers tallied six hits and committed two errors in the contest.

Sherman paced TWU with a 2-for-2 effort with two RBI’s and a run scored. Johnson added a hit and RBI. Ashley Martin (4-9) took the loss in five innings of relief. Martin allowed seven hits and five runs (three earned) with four strikeouts.

“Rhonda and Rachel were good at the plate. They made things happen scoring wise,” Blowers said. “The pitchers are working really hard on 0-2 and 1-2 counts. We hung some balls and had some errors. The errors came at bad times.”

The Pioneers dropped the second game of the day to the Rattlers. St. Mary’s scored four runs in the first inning off TWU starter Lindsy Russ-Keller.

In the sixth frame, pinch-hitter Amber Brooks tied the game with a base hit. The Rattlers responded with a run in the bottom of the inning for the victory.

TWU finished the day against C-SC. The Lady Wildcats snapped an eight-game losing streak with the win. Each team tallied six hits with no errors.

The Pioneers scored first with its lone run in the second inning. Sherman singled and scored on an Ashley Hartley base hit.

C-SC scored two runs in the fourth frame to take control of the game. Amanda Chambless (2-3) took the loss in 4.1 innings of work. Martin finished the game in the circle for TWU.

TWU closes out the tournament on March 12 with games against Nebraska-Kearney at 9:00 a.m. and Mesa State at 11:30 a.m.
