PIONEERS SWEPT BY THE CARDINALS
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University was swept by Incarnate Word in a non-conference doubleheader at Pioneer Field. The Cardinals took game one in nine innings, 6-5, and game two, 5-2.
The Pioneers (7-14) were held scoreless until the seventh inning of both games by the Cardinals (15-4).
TWU got back into game one with four runs in the seventh frame to tie the game. Amber Brooks started the rally with a single. Rachel Johnson followed with another single. With two outs, Rachel Townsend hit a two RBI double down the left field line. Amanda Emory continued the hit parade with an infield single. A Cardinal error allowed the tying runs to score and send the game to extra innings.
UIW reclaimed the lead with two runs in the ninth inning for the win. Amanda Chambless (2-2) took the loss as the starter allowing four runs in 1.2 innings of work. Krystyna Sims made her first appearance in the circle for the Pioneers this season. Sims allowed two hits and two runs with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief.
“We fought to get back in game one. It was a full team effort but I have to give some credit to Krystyna,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “She stepped in and did what was needed to get our game plan done. She kept the ball low, worked off speed, in and out. Number five earned a lot of respect from the staff and the whole program. She has had some pitching experience and this was the right time to get her in.”
The Cardinals controlled game two as well. UIW scored in the fourth, sixth and seventh frames.
Down 5-0, TWU scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. First, Emory singled up the middle for her second hit of the game. Amanda Danesi trailed her with a walk before a fly and strike out. With two outs, Rhonda Sherman singled which scored Emory and Danesi.
“It goes back to intensity in game two. Amber stood out tonight. She stepped in and was patient at the plate,” Blowers added. “It is frustrating.”
Next, TWU plays at Southeastern Oklahoma on March 7. The doubleheader begins at 4:00 p.m.
