PIONEERS SPLIT WITH RATTLERS ON THE DIAMOND
DENTON , Texas – After having its four-game winning streak snapped in game one, Texas Woman’s University rebounded to split with St. Mary’s in a non-conference doubleheader at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers (7-12) dropped the first game, 6-1, and won the second, 7-4, against the Rattlers (9-9).
“We had a lack of focus and intensity in game one. The second game was much better all the way around,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “I thought our pitching staff did a good job. Amanda (Chambless) and Ashley (Martin) had everything working. We stuck to our game plan in how we were going to pitch them. The catchers did a good job of calling. Ashley (Hartley) was fabulous and Amanda (Danesi) did a good job.”
The Rattlers controlled game one from the outset with two runs in the first inning. Tiffani Craft walked to start the game. Jessica Romero doubled in both runs with two outs.
St. Mary’s added runs in the third and fourth frames as well. Kelcy Walker took Martin deep to left field with a runner on in the third inning. Terrie Cox did the damage in the fourth with a two RBI double.
TWU scored its lone run in the seventh inning. Pinch hitter Amanda Arnold started the frame with a single. With two outs, Tiffanie Boone scored Rachel Johnson with a double to right center field.
Martin (3-7) took the loss with eight hits, six runs (three earned), four walks and five strikeouts in seven innings. Boone collected two of the Pioneers six hits.
Game two was a different story with TWU taking the early lead. The Pioneers put three runs on the board in the first inning with one hit and two Rattler errors.
Boone singled to start the game. She promptly swiped second and third base before crossing the plate on a wild pitch. Rachel Townsend walked and Hartley reached on an error before scoring.
The Pioneers added four runs in the sixth inning to put the game away. Danesi started the rally with a base on balls. Hartley joined her on base after a fielder’s choice. Rhonda Sherman picked up two RBIs with a double. Sherman and Krystyna Sims also scored to give TWU a 7-4 lead.
Boone had two hits and two stolen bases. She leads the team with 17 stolen bases in 18 attempts this season. Sherman also had two hits and two RBIs. Martin (4-7) earned the win after relieving Chambless in the fourth inning.
Next, TWU hosts Incarnate Word on March 1 for two games beginning at 4:00 p.m.
