TWU TAKES TWO FROM WESLEYAN
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University swept Texas Wesleyan in non-conference action with a 7-6 victory in game one and a 14-6 five-inning triumph in game two.
The Pioneers (5-11) fell behind twice in game one before winning the game in the seventh inning. TWU took its first lead in the fifth inning with three runs on three hits and a Ram error.
The Rams (0-4) came back with three in the seventh frame to regain the lead 6-5. Rachel Townsend started the Pioneers last at-bat with a single. Amanda Danesi followed with a base hit. Ashley Hartley tied the game with a single before Rhonda Sherman doubled in the winning run.
“We overcame adversity, made adjustments and then got some attitude in the first game. That was the difference,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “The team forced themselves to step up to the challenge and do better.”
TWU put 10 runs on the board in the first inning of game two with two hits and three Ram errors. Wesleyan starter Rachel Lamont took the early exit allowing a hit, five runs and two walks with no outs. The Pioneers added two runs in the third and fifth innings to enforce the run rule.
“In the first inning we had 10 runs but only two hits. On the flip side of that we didn’t swing at bad pitches. We want to make the pitchers throw and take advantage of what we get,” Blowers added. “We still have to work on walks, throwing out of the zone when we are ahead in the count and keeping the batters off-balance. The defensive was not as sharp as we have been. We will work on fundamentals tomorrow.”
Next, the Pioneers play Southwestern Oklahoma on Feb. 24 at 12:00 p.m. at the Lone Star Conference First Pitch Tournament in Irving, Texas. TWU also plays Midwestern State at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
