TWU WINS TWO AT LEAD-OFF CLASSIC
PHOENIX , Ariz. – Texas Woman’s University snapped a five-game losing skid with two victories at the Schutt Sports/Division II Lead-Off Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., to win the bronze consolation bracket.
The Pioneers (4-11) beat New Mexico Highlands 10-2 and Belmont Abbey 7-3 in action today.
“We kept getting better and better as we played and it all came together. We worked through every one of the obstacles at the tournament,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “It was a good day all the way around. We had great team support. Every athlete contributed in both games.”
First TWU beat NMHU in six innings. The Pioneers recorded 12 hits with 11 singles and a double in the contest.
The Pioneers put four runs on the board in the sixth frame to enforce the run rule. TWU put together four singles to start the inning before drawing a walk. Next, Rachel Johnson brought in two runs with a single.
Amanda Chambless started the game in the circle. She went three and one-third innings allowing two runs and five hits with four strikeouts. Ashley Martin relieved her and shut down the Cowgirls with two k’s.
Against Belmont Abbey, TWU had seven hits including three singles, two doubles, a triple and a homer.
Amanda Danesi hit the first home run of her career in the fifth inning. Rachel Townsend started the frame with a walk. Then the Crusaders switched pitchers. Danesi took the first pitch from her deep.
Amber Brooks added an RBI triple in the seventh frame for her first collegiate hit. Lindsy Russ-Keller earned the complete game victory allowing eight hits with five strikeouts.
TWU returns to the diamond for a doubleheader with Texas Wesleyan on Feb. 22 starting at 3:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
