PIONEERS CAN’T STOP SKID AGAINST COUGARS
PHOENIX , Ariz. – Texas Woman’s University entered bracket play at the Schutt Sports/Division II Lead-Off Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., and dropped its fifth straight game to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 4-3.
The Pioneers (2-11) will now play the loser of the New Mexico Highlands and Montana State-Billings game on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. With a win they advance to play at 12:30 p.m. in the double-elimination bracket.
“We played much better. This was our best game offensively and defensively as a whole this year,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “We had control until the sixth inning and lost it. We just keep working and are getting better every game.”
Lindsy Russ-Keller started in the circle. SIUE took the early lead with a home run in the second inning. TWU came right back with three runs in the third frame.
Rhonda Sherman started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a defensive bobble. She was moved to third base with a sacrifice bunt. Sarah White followed with a walk. Amanda Emory drove in Sherman with a base hit. Next, Amanda Chambless plated White and Emory with a single.
The Cougars reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning with three runs en route to the win. With no outs, Chambless relieved Russ-Keller on the mound.
TWU and SIUE each had five hits in the game.
