PIONEERS FALL TO UC SAN DIEGO
PHOENIX , Ariz. – Texas Woman’s University lost 1-4 to UC San Diego to conclude pool play at the Schutt Sports/Division II Lead-Off Classic in Phoenix, Ariz.
Now the Pioneers (2-10) begin bracket play with a game against Southern Illinois at 5:30 p.m. today. TWU will play again at 7:00 p.m. tonight if they win and at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday if they lose.
Against UCSD, TWU scored its lone run on a solo home run by Amanda Chambless with two outs in the seventh inning. It was the first long ball for Chambless in her career and also the initial one of the season for the Pioneers.
The Tritons put runs on the board in the first and fifth innings. In the fifth frame, UCSD scored three with two homers.
Ashley Martin took the loss allowing seven hits and four earned runs. The Pioneers offense notched just two hits with the Chambless homer and an Amanda Emory base hit.
“I think the kids know we need to keep swinging and it will happen. UCSD wasn’t overpowering,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “Amanda crushed the ball. On their home runs, we missed a pitch on one and they got a hold of the second one.”
