PIONEERS DROP TWO AT LEAD-OFF CLASSIC

PHOENIX , Ariz. – Texas Woman’s University opened play at the Schutt Sports/Division II Lead-Off Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., with losses to Cal State-San Bernardino, 1-10 in five innings, and Regis, 2-4.

The Pioneers (2-9) are off to its worst start since softball was reinstated in 1997. TWU played CSUSB and Regis both for the first time.

“I think we’re awfully tired of losing. We fell like we have done several things pretty good. We are hitting and pitching but need to score runs,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “In the first game, we mentally fell apart and had some uncommon defensive errors. Game two was much closer. We came out differently and more focused.”

The Coyotes took an early 2-0 lead before scoring eight in the third frame to break the game open. Ashley Martin started for the Pioneers allowing seven runs with six earned in three innings. Amanda Chambless entered in relief.

TWU scored its lone run in the fifth inning. Tiffanie Boone singled and stole second base before scoring. Amanda Emory drove her in with a RBI single. The Pioneers had seven hits and three errors.

The Pioneers scored early against the Rangers. Boone singled and swiped second base to start the first inning. Amanda Danesi plated her on a squeeze play.

Rachel Townsend added another run after reaching base on an error in the sixth inning. She advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third before pinch-hitter Chambless brought her in.

Regis scored two runs in the first inning and added one in the fourth and seventh frames as well. Lindsy Russ-Keller took the complete game loss allowing 10 hits.

TWU continues play in Phoenix on Feb. 17 with a game against California- San Diego at 9:00 a.m.
