PIONEERS SPLIT DOUBLE DIP WITH HILLTOPPERS
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University and St. Edward’s split a doubleheader on a blustery day at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers (2-7) took game one, 4-0, and the Hilltoppers (6-3) won game two, 2-6.
“In the first game we accomplished all our goals. Ashley (Martin) did a great job. Ashley and Amanda (Danesi) were on the same page,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “We used more off-speed pitches and they put together a good game plan along with the defense.”
TWU controlled game one from the outset. The Pioneers knocked SEU starter Courtney Francis out of the game in the first inning. Tiffanie Boone drew a lead-off walk on four straight balls. Amanda Emory followed with a bunt single. After a double steal, Mayra Hi was hit by a pitch to load the bases. At that point, Robin Becker replaced Francis in the circle. Becker got out of the jam allowing just one run on an Ashley Hartley suicide squeeze bunt with one out.
The Pioneers added two runs in the second frame. Sarah White scored on an Emory RBI single and Boone crossed the plate on a Hilltopper passed ball.
Rachel Johnson scored an insurance run in the sixth inning. After leading off with a single, Johnson advanced around the bases and scored on a SEU passed ball.
Martin (2-4) earned the victory with a six-inning shutout. She allowed three hits with four strikeouts. Lindsy Russ-Keller pitched the final three outs for the save.
Emory was 2-for-2 with a run and RBI to pace the offense.
Russ-Keller also started game two. The Hilltoppers took an early lead with an unearned run in the first inning with two hits.
Amanda Chambless relieved Russ-Keller in the fourth frame. SEU greeted her with three runs off three hits. The big one was a three-run homer by Karen Varteression with two outs.
Down 6-0, TWU put a run on the board in the sixth inning. With one out, Rachel Townsend started the rally with a double to the left center field gap to score Hartley who reached after being hit by a pitch.
The Pioneers scored again in the seventh. White singled before Boone plated her with a triple to left field.
“In the second game we got away from our goals and building blocks in terms of focus, concentration and production,” Blowers added. “We learned a lesson on contribution. It was learning point on how we all contribute or don’t.”
Next, TWU is in action at the Schutt Sports/Division II Lead-off Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., from Feb 16-18. The Pioneers start play on Feb. 16 against Cal State-San Bernardino at 12:00 p.m.
