PIONEERS STUNG BY NO. 12 HORNETS
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University dropped a doubleheader to No. 12 Emporia State University, 5-2 and 10-1, in its home opener at Pioneer Field.
The wet weather delayed the start of the games between the Pioneers (1-6) and Hornets (2-0).
“In the first game I felt that we were flat. We showed more emotion in game two,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “Ashley (Martin) threw a good game. Against a team the caliber of Emporia State you have to have the offensive support.”
ESU broke up a scoreless first game with a run in the fifth inning. The Hornets utilized a lead-off walk to take the lead with a hit and Pioneer error.
Neither team scored again until the seventh frame. ESU scored four runs with back-to-back home runs after two TWU errors to take a 5-0 lead.
Down to its last three outs, the Pioneers broke into the hit and run columns. After a Rachel Johnson walk, Amanda Danesi ended the no-hit effort of ESU pitcher Melissa Stevens with a RBI double. Danesi advanced to third base on a Rhonda Sherman ground out. With two outs, Rachel Townsend doubled scoring Danesi before she was thrown out trying to reach third base.
Martin (1-4) took the complete game loss allowing four hits, five runs and five walks with seven strikeouts.
The Hornets broke open a 4-1 game with six runs in the seventh inning of game two. ESU scored in the first, second, fourth and seventh frames off of TWU starter Lindsy Russ-Keller.
After falling behind early, the Pioneers scored in the fifth inning. Townsend and Johnson started the frame with singles. Next, Sarah White walked to load the bases for Amber Brooks. Brooks drew a walk as well keeping the bases full of Pioneers. Amanda Arnold struck out and Mayra Hi grounded out to leave three runners on base.
ESU batted around in the seventh. Morgan Viola started the rally with a homer to left field. The Hornets followed with five more runs off five hits.
Russ-Keller (0-1) took the loss giving up 13 hits and 10 runs with three strikeouts.
“Lindsy hung with them until the seventh. I felt we need to change our approach to the hitters and continue to mix it up. We started throwing outside than went inside but stayed in too long,” Blowers added. “Offensively, we connected with the ball more. Now we are preparing for St. Edward’s on Sunday.”
Next, TWU hosts St. Edward’s on Feb. 12 for a double dip beginning at 3:00 p.m. It is Family & Fan Day; join the Pioneers for lunch at Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q before the game from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
