PIONEERS FINISH TOURNAMENT WITH A WIN
SAN ANTONIO , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University offense broke loose for an 11-5 win over Cameron after falling to Delta State 1-2 at the St. Mary’s Tournament.
After being outscored 18-6 in the previous four games, the Pioneers (1-4) ended the tournament with a victory.
“I am extremely proud of the team. They came together and were on all cylinders at the end,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “It was a building weekend and ended on a good note.”
The offense exploded for 11 runs against the Aggies (0-4). TWU pounded out 17 hits including three doubles.
TWU utilized six hits for five runs in the third inning to take a 6-3 lead. With one out, Mayra Hi singled to start the rally. Next, Hartley doubled and Rachel Johnson singled scoring Hi. Amanda Danesi followed with a single scoring Ashley Hartley and Johnson.
With one out, Cameron brought in Bethany Stefinsky in relief. Rhonda Sherman flied out before Townsend singled and Sarah White doubled in two more runs.
“Ashley (Martin) started the second game. We focused on pushing runs and did,” Blowers said. “We were consistent and scored in several innings.”
Townsend and Sarah White both went 3-for-3. Hi and Johnson each added three hits in four at-bats. Martin (1-3) earned the triumph in four innings of work. Amanda Chambless pitched three innings of relief.
In the first game, Delta State (3-2) scored two runs in the first inning to win.
TWU got a run back in the fourth frame. Danesi led off with a single. Sherman sent Danesi to second base with a fielder’s choice ground out. Krystyna Sims entered to run for Danesi and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Hartley followed with a RBI single.
The Pioneers notched five hits but left seven runners on base. Martin took the loss. Hartley paced the offense with a 2-for-3 effort including a RBI.
“It was another close one. Ashley (Martin) threw great and Ashley (Hartley) called a good game. We struggled again with scoring,” Blowers added. “We were able to move the runners but not score.”
Next, TWU welcomes Emporia State to Pioneer Field for its home opener on Feb. 10. The doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
