PIONEERS DROP TWO GAMES AT TOURNAMENT
SAN ANTONIO , Texas – Texas Woman’s University continued play at the St. Mary’s Tournament dropping games to St. Edward’s, 1-10, and Southern Arkansas, 3-4.
The Pioneers (0-3) were outscored 14-4 by the Hilltoppers (1-0) and Muleriders (1-1). TWU is off to its worst start since softball was reinstated in 1997.
“In the first game we were out of character and it showed. We looked much better in the second game,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “We hit the ball hard in both games but it’s a matter of hitting straight to people.”
Amanda Chambless started and faced just three SEU batters before Lindsy Russ-Keller entered in relief. The Hilltoppers started the game with a triple and two singles.
Russ-Keller allowed just one hit with three strikeouts in three innings. Chambless reentered in the fourth inning. SEU added a run in the fourth and four in the fifth to lead 6-0 before TWU scored.
In the sixth, the Pioneers scored a run with two hits and an error. Tiffanie Boone reached on an error and promptly stole second base. Mayra Hi and Rachel Johnson followed with base hits to score Boone.
Boone, Hi, Johnson and Sarah White each had hits for TWU. SEU had 14 hits including two home runs. Chambless (0-1) gave up 13 hits and 10 runs (eight earned) with two strikeouts in four innings.
“Amanda was not pitching badly but they were hitting all of her stuff. Lindsy did a good job to shut them down,” Blowers added.
The Pioneers scored first against the Muleriders. Amanda Danesi started the second inning with a double. Rhonda Sherman sacrificed her to third base. Rachel Townsend followed with a RBI double down the left field line.
TWU entered the seventh frame down 4-2. Pinch hitter Amanda Arnold started the rally with a triple to left field. She scored after two Hilltopper errors put Boone on second base with no outs. Amanda Emory was the first out with a sacrifice bunt. Next, Hi walked and stole second setting the table for Johnson. With runners on second and third base, Johnson flied out and Danesi grounded out ending the game.
Martin (0-2) took the complete game loss. In seven innings, she allowed six hits, four runs (three earned) and six strikeouts. Danesi had two of the Pioneers six hits and scored two runs.
“Ashley did a good job on the mound. The hits didn’t fall for us,” Blowers said. “In a close game the small mistakes loom.”
The Pioneers conclude the tournament with games against Delta State (9:00 a.m.) and Cameron (11:15 a.m.) on Feb. 4.
