PIONEERS FALL TO CARDINALS IN EXTRA INNINGS
SAN ANTONIO , Texas – Texas Woman’s University started the 2006 softball season with a 1-2 loss in extra innings to Incarnate Word at the St. Mary’s Tournament.
The Pioneers (0-1) fell in eight innings to the Cardinals (2-0).
“It was a battle. We played wonderful defense. It was a close game but we started and finished well,” head coach Marty Blowers said. “The difference was that they out hit us.”
Both teams scored in the fifth inning. UIW reached base on a TWU fielding error to start the frame. After a sacrifice bunt and groundout, the Cardinals scored the unearned run on a single to left field.
TWU responded with a run on three hits in the bottom of the inning. Tiffanie Boone started the rally with an infield single. Amanda Emory advanced Boone to second with a sacrifice bunt. After Rachel Johnson flied out Amanda Danesi plated Boone with a RBI single. With two outs Rhonda Sherman singled putting Pioneers at first and third leading to a Rachel Townsend base on balls. Mayra Hi flied out to leave the bases loaded.
“I am proud of the resilience that we showed. We answered their run and played a good game,” Blowers added. “Freshmen Tiffanie and Mayra played great. Tiffanie batted leadoff and had three hits. Mayra hit the ball hard and made the defensive plays at first base. Lindsy (Russ-Keller) pitched a good game.”
With the game tied, 1-1, the international tie-breaker rule went into effect for the eighth inning. Ashley Martin relieved starter Russ-Keller. A passed ball sent the UIW runner to third base. After a pop-up and line out, the Cardinals singled to take the lead.
The Pioneers placed Sherman on second base needing a run. Townsend sacrificed her to third base for the first out. After a foul out, Ashley Hartley walked before a fly out ended the game.
Boone paced the offense with a 3-for-4 effort including a run scored and two stolen bases. Russ-Keller pitched seven innings allowing eight hits and an unearned run. Martin (0-1) took the loss in one inning of work.
“We had several great defense plays and ran the bases well,” Blowers said. “We have to come back and play tomorrow.”
TWU continues play at the St. Mary’s Tournament with games against St. Edward’s (9:00 a.m.) and Southern Arkansas (11:15 p.m.) on Feb. 3.
