WESTBROOK A FINALIST FOR DIVISION II ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
DENTON , Texas – The Collegiate Women Sports Awards Program announced that Texas Woman’s University senior Nakia Westbrook is the gymnastics nominee for the 2005-06 Division II Athlete of the Year sponsored by Honda.
In honor of this nomination, The American Honda Motor Company, Inc. will donate $1,000 to the institution’s athletics fund. Each year, women are selected not only for their superior athletic skills, but also for their leadership abilities, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.
Westbrook capped off her four-year career by helping TWU capture its eighth USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship. The Pioneers also won the 2006 Midwest Independent Conference title. She earned USAG all-America honors on vault and MIC all-Conference second team recognition. During her freshman season, the Pioneers won the USAG team title as well.
The Round Rock, Texas, native was a three-time MIC scholar-athlete, two-time USAG scholar-athlete and a National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women Scholastic all-American in addition to being named to the 2006 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Westbrook is one of 12 nominees voted on nationwide by NCAA Division II member schools. The winner of the Division II Athlete of the Year will be presented her award at a press conference June 26 in New York City in the Low Library at Columbia University.
