ARNO AND FUENTES ENJOY COMPETITION AT SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL

FAYETTEVILLE , Ark. – Courtney Arno and Brisa Fuentes each competed as individuals for Texas Woman’s University at the 2006 South Central Regional Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas on Saturday night.

“I thought this was a great experience for them to compete at a high level type meet. It will help them get ready for Nationals,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “I am proud of Courtney, she went 2-for-2, hitting on both the bars and beam. Brisa had a little problem on floor but she said that will not happen next week (at Nationals).”

Florida won the Regional Championship with a score of 196.375. The Lady Razorbacks took second place with a 195.400 followed by UCLA (195.175), Illinois (193.125), Illinois-Chicago (191.125) and Southeast Missouri State (189.050). Both the Gators and Gym’Backs advance to the NCAA Championships.

Arno represented TWU on the uneven bars and balance beam. She competed on the bars in the first rotation posting a score of 9.700. In the next rotation, she was on the beam and earned a 9.575 mark.

“It was fun to be here,” Arno said. “I enjoyed the big meet feel and being a part of it.”

Fuentes was on the floor exercise in the fourth rotation. She put her hands down on the last pass for a season-low mark of 9.025.

“I expected to do better but it was a new experience and opportunity,” Fuentes stated. “Now I know what I need to do at Nationals.”

Next for the Pioneers is the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships from Thursday, April 13 through Saturday, April 15 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. TWU enters the meet as the top team in the USAG standings and is aiming for their eighth national title.
