TWU SCORES A 191.425 AGAINST TOUGH COMPETITION
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University scored a 191.425 against tough competition in a triangular meet with No. 15 Arizona and No. 23 BYU on Senior Night at Magee Arena.
The Wildcats stole the show with a season-high 196.575 to win the meet and sweep the individual titles as well. The Cougars were second with a 193.725.
“It was another typical meet for TWU this year. We showed some stellar performances but counted three falls. That takes 1.5 points off the team score which is where we need to be,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “The team has yet this year to put four events together. It’s frustrating but at the same time I know the team is hungry and determined to do it. Time is running out, now we have to hit in order to advance.”
The Pioneers balance beam lineup compiled a season-high mark of 47.975. Courtney Arno finished tied for fourth place with a 9.775 on the uneven bars. Nakia Westbrook also tied for fourth on the vault with a score of 9.850.
Freshman Tonya Pipkorn competed on three events and posted season-best scores in each one. On the vault she recorded a 9.650 in addition to a 9.775 on beam and 9.725 on the floor.
“Tonya had a great meet. She competed for the first time on vault, did one of her best beam routines in my opinion counting college and age-group competition and also started us on floor,” Kudlac added. “Nakia had a nice vault. Courtney was consistent on bars and beam.”
Next, TWU travels to the Midwest Independent Conference Championships on March 25 at 1:00 p.m. hosted by Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
“MIC’s is winnable for this team. We have to hit. The meet will be a battle and one of the closest yet,” Kudlac said. “Our score helped our Regional Qualifying Score and we should still maintain first place in the USAG rankings.”
