FALLS HURT PIONEERS AGAINST THE LADIES
SHREVEPORT , La. – Counting five falls led to the demise of Texas Woman’s University while Centenary College recorded a season-high score to win the dual meet, 192.325-191.700, in Midwest Independent Conference action.
“We beat ourselves today. It is disappointing. We counted five falls, that is two and a half points,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “We are clearly the better team but not today.”
The Pioneers (6-11, 1-4) posted a season-high mark of 49.000 on the uneven bars to start the meet. Brisa Fuentes earned second place with a 9.850 mark. Brista Michael added a season-best 9.825 to tie for third place.
Next, TWU competed on the vault. Nakia Westbrook won the event with a 9.850 mark leading the team to a 48.175. Brittany Parker tied for second place honors with a score of 9.750.
“After the first two events, we were on pace to set a season-high,” Kudlac said. “We had one fall on vault but it didn’t count. Nakia hit her new vault.”
The floor exercise started the trouble for TWU. The team notched its third lowest score (46.975) of the year. Fuentes led the way with a 9.800 which earned second place. Amber McMeans added a 9.625 mark.
The Pioneers ended the competition on the balance beam with a 47.550 team tally. Courtney Arno won the beam title with a 9.800 mark. Tonya Pipkorn finished tied for second place with a season-high score of 9.75.
“Floor is where we dug a big hole. The meet was close going into the third rotation. Brisa stepped up,” Kudlac added. “On the beam, it was too little too late with three falls.”
TWU returns home to wrap up the regular season with a triangular meet against Arizona and BYU on March 18 at 7:00 p.m. The Pioneers will celebrate Senior, Parent and Alumni Night during the meet.
“The word is frustrating. On the coaches’ end we have done all we can. It is up to the athletes to put four events together,” Kudlac added. “I am looking forward to focusing on gymnastics without school during Spring Break this week. Our final home meet of the year is on Saturday.”
