FUENTES LEADS PIONEERS TO THIRD-PLACE AT QUAD MEET
DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University finished in third place at its quadrangular meet with Iowa, Southeast Missouri State and Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The Hawkeyes captured the meet title with a 194.275. The Redhawks (193.050), Pioneers (191.225) and Eagles (183.500) followed.
Brisa Fuentes led the TWU effort with a career-high 9.825 on the floor exercise to win the individual title.
“TWU was a good team but not a great team tonight. We have the potential but haven’t shown it this year,” head coach Frank Kudlac stated. “It was a disappointing evening for the Pioneers in losing to Midwest Independent Conference rival SEMO. Brisa was good on vault and floor. She hit her new 10.0 start value vault.”
The Pioneers started the meet on vault. Brittany Parker took third place with a career-best 9.750.
TWU moved to the uneven bars and posted a 48.350 team score. Amber McMeans tied for sixth with a 9.725 to lead the team. Bethany Rehm and Fuentes each added scores of 9.700.
“We had to count a fall on vault. We are trying new ones and still learning on that event. We will have to make a decision to go for them or stay conservative in the future,” Kudlac added. “Bars were good; we had a fall but didn’t count it. Bethany put in new skills and hit which helped her score.”
Brittany Parker (9.750), Amy Hulbert (9.775) and Kelsey Nixon (9.775) started the Pioneers off strong on the balance beam.
TWU registered a season-high team score of 47.725 on the floor exercise. Fuentes paced the team with the help of Nakia Westbrook (9.650), Nicole Poling (9.550), Jennifer Kingsbury (9.400) and Nixon (9.300).
“On beam the first three were solid. The end of our lineup all suffered falls and we had to count two of those,” Kudlac said. “Floor was better. Brisa put in a new last pass and hit for a career-best. We are still making small errors which hurt our scoring potential. Amber looked good during her exhibition on floor after a year-long hiatus. She is working to break into the lineup.”
Next for TWU is a dual meet at Oklahoma on March 3 at 7:00 p.m.
