WITH SEASON-LOW MARKS, TWU FALLS TO FLAMES
CHICAGO , Ill. – Falls and misses led to the lowest score of the year for Texas Woman’s University as the Pioneers fell to the University of Illinois at Chicago, 190.275-187.250, in Midwest Independent Conference action.
The Pioneers (5-7, 0-2) got off to a rough start against the Flames (5-5, 2-0) beginning with the uneven bars. Brista Michael, Amber McMeans and Brisa Fuentes fell as TWU recorded a score of 46.175 as a team.
“We started on bars, counting two of our three falls, to begin the meet,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “We moved to the vault. At this point I decided not to be conservative and go for our new vaults.”
TWU posted a 47.375 score on vault with two falls counting towards the season-low mark. Brittany Parker tied her season-high with a 9.700. Amie Boles added a 9.575.
“UIC was also falling to help us but it didn’t matter. On floor, we put hands down and went out of bounds,” Kudlac added.
Next was the floor exercise. Tonya Pipkorn led the team with a season-best 9.650. Nicole Poling added a 9.450 to the 46.600 team score.
The Pioneers finished on the balance beam with a 47.100. Amy Hulbert tallied a season-high 9.525. Kelsey Nixon and Pipkorn each added 9.500 marks.
“We finished nicely on beam. The first five hit,” Kudlac said. “Kelsey had the best performance of her career.”
The Pioneers return to Magee Arena for a quadrangular meet with Iowa, Southeast Missouri State and Wisconsin-La Crosse on Feb. 25 at 7:00 p.m.
“The bad news is we have to live with this score. The good is the team is upset and angry. We will be motivated for next week,” Kudlac added. “We have been consistent but fell off this meet. I know we will improve and it will be nice to be home this week.”
