GYMNASTICS SCORE A 191.125 TO FINISH SECOND
LOGAN , Utah – With a season-high team total on vault including a second-place individual finish, Texas Woman’s University was second at the triangular meet with Utah State and Washington.
The Aggies won the meet with a 193.350 followed by the Pioneers (191.125) and Huskies (190.400).
“Our score of 191.125 shows consistency which is very encouraging. It shouldn’t hurt us too bad in the rankings and hopefully we will keep the number one spot in the USAG standings,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “It was our first win over Washington in the history of the program.”
TWU began the meet on the balance beam. Brittany Parker went first posting a 9.600. Courtney Arno led the team with a 9.750 to tie for sixth place.
“We started on the beam which is not easy. We handled it very well,” Kudlac added. “Courtney was phenomenal. We had one fall from Brisa (Fuentes) but it was only her second time on beam.”
The Pioneers moved to the floor exercise. Fuentes recorded a 9.700 to lead the team and claim third place. Nakia Westbrook and Poling each added scores of 9.675 and 9.625, respectively.
“We went to floor next which has been giving us some problems,” Kudlac said. “The first three didn’t hit but the last three did. Nakia did a nice routine and Brisa anchored us.”
The third rotation sent the Pioneers to the vault. The team set a new season-best with a 48.325. Westbrook took second place with a season-high 9.850 as well. Kelsey Nixon (9.525) and Nicole Poling (9.700) added season-best marks.
“On vault, we did very well. Nicole performed her new 10.0 start value routine. Nakia also did her new vault,” Kudlac stated. “I am proud of Nicole. Her new vault will help us down the road.”
TWU ended the meet on the uneven bars. Bethany Rehm paced the Pioneers with a 9.675 earning third-place honors.
“We finished on bars. Brisa hit again for a 9.600. The rock solid Courtney fell,” Kudlac said. “We have been building all year but floor and bars hurt us. It is nothing we can’t fix and are excited to leave with a win over Washington, a division I team.”
Fuentes competed as an all-arounder for the second consecutive meet. She finished fourth overall with a 37.825 mark.
The Pioneers wrap up its three-meet road swing at Illinois-Chicago on Feb. 18 at 7:00 p.m.
