PIONEERS FALL TO REDHAWKS WITH A SEASON-HIGH SCORE OF 192.000

CAPE GIRARDEAU , Mo. – Texas Woman’s University recorded a season-high score but was edged by less than a point, 192.000-192.925, by Southeast Missouri State in a Midwest Independent Conference dual meet at Houck Field House.

The Pioneers (4-5, 0-1 MIC) competed on the road for the first time this season. The Redhawks (3-2, 1-1 MIC) won three of the four events and also posted a season-best overall score.

“I am pleased with the score. It will help us in the rankings and possibly put us in first in the USAG,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “We had outstanding performances to win events. The floor was the demise of the Pioneers today.”

TWU started the meet on the bars with a season-high mark of 48.725. Courtney Arno captured the individual title with a season-best 9.875.

Next was the vault. Again the team posted its best score of the year with a 48.175. Nakia Westbrook earned first place honors with a season-high 9.775.

“Courtney was solid on the bars. Everyone hit big,” Kudlac said. “We had several new vaults which was exciting. Kelsey (Nixon) and Nakia both unveiled vaults with 10.0 start values. Kelsey didn’t hit but had a good attempt for a 9.275. Nakia hit to win the event.”

The Pioneers were on the floor exercise for the third rotation. Westbrook led the team to a 47.150 with a season-best 9.675. Nixon and Nicole Poling also notched season-highs with scores of a 9.050 and 9.550, respectively.

“Floor is where we fell behind. We weren’t clean,” Kudlac added. “Small mistakes this year are large deductions. We can clean it up.”

TWU finished on the balance beam with a 47.950 to win the event. Brittany Parker had a season-best 9.800 to take the beam title.

Additionally, Brisa Fuentes competed as an all-arounder for the Pioneers. She placed fourth with a 38.150.

“Brisa is the first all-arounder we have had in three years,” Kudlac said. “The meet was a good experience with the MIC Championships being held in the same venue. We will get a rematch with SEMO later this season at home as well.”

Next for the Pioneers is a triangular meet at Utah State with Washington on Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
