TWU TAKES SECOND AT QUAD MEET

DENTON , Texas – Texas Woman’s University took second place with a 190.900 in a quadrangular meet with New Hampshire, San Jose State and Wisconsin-Eau Claire before 512 fans at Magee Arena.

The Wildcats won the meet with a 194.400 followed by the Pioneers, Spartans (190.300) and Blugolds (181.300).

“I think the Pioneers took a step forward in performance compared to last week,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “It was nice to see new faces in the line-up. We will continue mixing it up to find the key players for TWU.”

TWU started the meet on vault with a 47.850 team score. Freshman Brittany Parker led the Pioneers with a 9.700 her career-high.

“ Brittany upgraded her vault this meet. She did an outstanding one worth a score of 9.900,” Kudlac added.

The Pioneers moved to bars for the second rotation. Courtney Arno paced the team with a score of 9.825 good for second place. Brisa Fuentes and Bethany Rehm each added a 9.625 mark to the team total of 48.100.

“On bars, Courtney and Brisa were strong. They are a nice one-two punch,” Kudlac stated. “ Bethany was right up there as well. We were strong on bars with one fall which didn’t count.”

The balance beam hurt the Pioneers as they recorded 47.250 team score. Arno earned another second place finish with a 9.800.

“We had a little bit of problems on beam. We counted a fall there but didn’t fall apart,” Kudlac said. “ Arno came through strong with a solid routine.”

TWU finished the meet on the floor exercise. Fuentes picked up second place honors with a season-high 9.800. Amie Boles (9.700), Jennifer Kingsbury (9.175), Nicole Poling (9.375) and Nakia Westbrook (9.650) added to the 47.700 team score.

“Floor gave us a lot of problems last week. We had a few problems but didn’t count a fall. We just weren’t sharp on floor. We need to finish stronger with last passes. Our tumbling landings need to be better as well,” Kudlac said. “Overall, Brisa continued to impress me. Amie set the tone with a 9.700. Floor will be our best event eventually.”

The Pioneers conclude its three-meet homestand with a triangular meet including Oklahoma and Air Force on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2:00 p.m. Olympic Gold Medalist Carly Patterson is making a special appearance and will sign autographs after the meet. It is also Salute to our Military Heroes Day.

“It was a nice win over San Jose State and Wisconsin-Eau Claire. We have a week of training for our next big meet with Oklahoma and Air Force,” Kudlac added.
