Pioneer Post 8 -- Week of Nov. 29,
2004
Hello!
This is Dana Giametta with the last Pioneer Post addition
for 2004. This past week has been long but exciting for the
TWU gymnastics team. To begin, the team had the opportunity
to set the tone for the season at our Intra Squad meet on
December 3rd. It was a great experience for everyone and
we all did really well. We had over 200 fans in attendance!
Out of the top six routines on each event, we only had to
count one fall! There are more details about the meet at
www.twuathletics.com including scores and photos.
This week’s practices were shorter than normal because
finals are coming up. The team was prepared and did not let
down this last week despite the fact that everyone was under
the pressure of finals. Both attitudes and gymnastics in practice
were great. In fact, on Tuesday just as we were getting ready
to end practice, coach gave one of our seniors (that would
be me!) an incentive. He said that if I did this difficult
flight, which I had never done before on the high beam, then
we would not have to come to practice on Thursday. As the rest
of the team and coaches encouraged me, I actually did it and
everyone was so excited! That same day we also enjoyed a pizza
party since our team won the canned food drive contest sponsored
by our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Each team
was asked to collect as many canned goods as possible and create
a unique design with the cans. The gymnastics team won with
a total of 570 cans! Our design was a gymnast, of course.
During the week, we also participate in Secret Santa just as
we did Secret Spook at Halloween. We gave and received gifts
throughout the week and then the final gift comes at our Christmas
party. Each year the team and coaches get together at Coach
Kudlac’s house for our annual party. The seniors, who
had a great time preparing lunch, made a pasta dish for everyone.
After eating and exchanging gifts, it was time to go to the
next big event, An Afternoon with Santa. Each year SAAC organizes
a gift exchange and each team sponsors needy children for the
holidays. Lauren K. went out and picked out some great gifts
for the children that we had this year. We actually had the
chance to attend a get-together with all the teams and the
children we “adopted.” It was so rewarding when
we got to see the faces of the parents and children when they
opened their gifts.
We are all so excited and looking forward to Christmas break
and then getting back into the gym on January 2nd to prepare
for our first meet, January 15th, in Magee Arena when the OU
Sooners come to town!
Happy Holidays to all!
