Pioneer Post 25 -- Week of May 25, 2005

2005 Season Recap

by Erin MacNabb

The TWU Pioneer gymnastics team had high hopes for the 2004-05 season. We welcomed seven new team members, five new freshmen and two transfers. We began the preseason with running and conditioning. We gradually built up our running for the famous “eight mile run.”

At the team workouts in the fall, we could tell we would be unstoppable. As routines came together, most of the team was ready for our annual Intrasquad meet in December. A few highlights of our season were our away meets at Air Force in Colorado, the University of Arizona, the University of Alaska-Anchorage, and Nationals at Cornell in Ithaca, New York. A big highlight at home was our win against Utah State.

Texas Woman’s has not finished any lower than second place at the national championship since 1991 except for one time and this year proved no different. Eight teams competed on day one with the top four teams qualifying for the second day. TWU squeaked into the second day, coming from behind on the last event, to finish fourth. TWU competed much better as a team on day two. We finished in second place, behind Rutgers University, a new school to the USAG scene. As a senior, I was much happier finishing this year than last year. We finished the year as a very close team with much more unity than past years, which meant as much if not more than winning a national championship.

This was a great year and lots of fun! We traveled to many great places and had a lot of good times! I definitely left my senior year with no regrets. Our gymnastics skill level was amazing and it took us awhile to get it all together! Our coaches kept us training hard and focused on our goal! The underclassmen were a lot of fun and surprised us everyday!!! I hope the traditions we have left them will be carried on for many years to come!

I am glad that I got to end my senior year with a great experience and great friends. Our team went through a lot of challenges and we finally competed as a team at Nationals which felt great. We didn’t win, but our team accomplished all of the goals that the seven seniors set which was amazing. The year was a really up and down one. One meet we were unstoppable then the next meet we beat ourselves but in the end we can all say that we gave it our all and had a great time. Thanks for all the memories. I will miss you all and look forward to hearing about the 2006 season.
Go Pioneers!!

I am very grateful for all of the memories and friends I have made through this experience as a part of the TWU gymnastics team. There are several people who have made such a huge impact in my life and that is one thing that I will never forget and always respect. I have enjoyed all that I have learned in gymnastics as well, and wish everyone else on the team and future TWU gymnasts the best of luck in the future.

This has been quite a year for the Pioneer gymnasts with a number of ups and downs. The group was able to pull it together enough to end the season in second place going into Nationals in Ithaca, New York. We would like to thank all of you again who supported us this year, not only at home, but on our away meets. Thank you also for the good wishes we received from many of you via fax while we were in Ithaca for Nationals. And, we especially want to thank the family and friends that were able to join us in Ithaca for Nationals. This support encouraged us to hang in there the first night despite a rough start on beam to make it into the finals by placing fourth. And at finals, the results gave TWU a second place finish against a very formidable and talented Rutgers team that captured the National title. There is a lot of talent lined up for next year. With their hard work and your support, we hope next year will find TWU recapturing the National title.

Hey Pioneer Fans! The end is here and I can't believe that four years has come and gone. The year has been one of many ups and downs but the finish will not be forgotten. Although the year didn't finish the way I had wanted it to I still learned so much from being on this team. We had so much fun on our away trips. Alaska was so much fun. I wish you all could have seen a bunch of Texans playing in the snow! I enjoyed my last year of gymnastics. I've been in this sport for so long and although I'm sad it's over, I'm glad it happened. Thank you so much to everyone who has made my life here so wonderful. I came here not knowing anyone but I leave with an extended family.

The 2004-2005 gymnastics year was one of the best year’s out of the four I experienced. The seniors started the year off with a retreat were we made some goals for each other and the team. To see us and the team achieve those goals was amazing. No…. we did not win Nationals, we came in second, but we were a close and strong team through the whole season which was the goal. I have never been on such a tight knit team. I will miss being in the gym and around so many girls that have such a true love for everyone. I would like to thank the fans at home and those far away that just read the Pioneer Post. With out y’all a lot of things TWU gymnastics is about would not be made possible. Also in the end, I would like to wish all the gymnasts for the 2005-06 season good luck and I cannot wait to come and see you all do awesome!

Thanks for all the wonderful memories.

Conclusion from the juniors, soon to be seniors…..

Bethany Rehm, Nakia Westbrook, & Amber McMeans

We think the year went well and as always we learned a lot as the season progressed. This year was not just about gymnastics, but really gave our team the chance to learn more about each other and grow together. We are excited to keep building on that momentum and continue growing as a team. We are looking forward to being seniors next year and for the opportunity to help lead the team as well as achieve the goals that we set as a team. We’ll keep you updated next year as the season develops!! Thanks for your support through our 2005 season!
