PIONEERS HIT ON THREE OF FOUR EVENTS AGAINST SOONERS
NORMAN , Okla. – The Texas Woman’s University gymnastics team cruised through the first three events but couldn’t stay on the balance beam in a dual meet with the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners.
“The positive things were that it was a great meet until we hit the beam. We get to kick out a team score of 188 from our average but could have scored a 193,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “We wanted to keep the momentum going. At this point of the season the score was okay but we didn’t do what we needed to.”
The Pioneers (3-11) finished with an overall team score of 191.425, their best away score of the year. The Sooners posted a score of 196.325 en route to sweeping the team and top three individual honors.
As the visiting team, TWU started on the bars hitting all six routines for a team score of 48.225. Courtney Arno led the squad with a 9.755 mark.
Next the Pioneers were on the vault and again hit six of six routines for 48.125 team score. Nakia Westbrook matched her season high with a 9.75.
TWU continued to hit, nailing all six routines on the floor exercise. Rachel Goddard recorded a 9.825 to lead the team to a 48.300.
The balance beam was where the problems began for the Pioneers. The first four gymnasts fell before Arno and Goddard hit their routines for 9.75 marks.
“I think that lack of focus, confidence and concentration led to the problems on the beam. In warm-ups people fell and that got into our heads,” Kudlac added. “Courtney hit big in her two events. Brisa (Fuentes) had a good performance on bars (9.625); she broke into the lineup and did a nice job.”
The meet was a double dual with the Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team. On the men’s side, the No. 2 Sooners beat the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes by two tenths of a point.
Next for the Pioneers is a quadrangular meet at Arizona with Ball State and Cal-State-Fullerton on March 11 at 7:30 p.m.
